Lewis John Shuster

Biotech industry executive Lewis Shuster, of Encinitas California, died on December 13, 2018 after a brief battle with advanced pancreatic cancer.  He was 63.

Lew earned a BA in Economics, with High Honors, at Swarthmore College in 1977 and worked for the Senate Budget Committee in Washington, DC as an Economist.  He then earned an MBA at Stanford University, where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar (top 10% of class).

In Lew’s business career, he worked at The Boston Consulting Group, and spent more than three decades in the life sciences field, where he held executive positions with Kemia, Inc., Invitrogen Corporation, Human Genome Sciences, Inc., Pharmacopeia Inc., and Microbiological Associates, Inc.  He founded Shuster Capital in 2002, where he put his considerable experience to work as an advisor and board member for public and private life science companies, as well as being an angel investor in promising start-ups.

He was a loving husband and father, a wine aficionado, and a tennis player.  He also loved classical music, hiking in our national parks, and pie.  He is survived by his wife of over 25 years, Kate, his daughter Anna—currently attending Georgetown University, stepson Trevor of Encinitas, CA, parents Duane and Irene Shuster of Avon Lake OH, brother David and his wife Jean, along with their sons Jason and Robert, of Canton, GA.

Memorial donations would be especially appropriate to the Yosemite Conservancy (San Francisco, CA), or Mainly Mozart (San Diego, CA).
